Gossip Girl

Directed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, with the first episode airing on 17th September 2007, Gossip Girl became one of the most watched shows by the American teens and youngster all around the globe. It’s safe to say that it was the first such show of its kind, introducing the scandalous lives of insanely rich high school kids residing on the upper east side of Manhattan, New York. An anonymous person launches a website by the name of Gossip Girl and posts about all of the gossip relevant to these rich kids, with the first post being about the “it girl” Serena Van Der Woodsen.

The star of the show, the beautiful and sensational Blake Lively got a lot of her fame through her character Serena Van Der Woodsen alongside Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf who the queen bee of her school. Both these best friends have a toxic yet inseparable bond, with intense breakups and patch ups making the audience always choose a side. Penn Badgley playing the role of Dan Humphery, referred to as “the lonely boy” by gossip girl which is basically a website is not as wealthy as the rest of the characters and has gotten in this private school purely on the basis of merit and his father’s savings. Dan is awestruck by Serena (the golden girl) because of her beauty and her happy go lucky vibe. Ed Westwick as Chuck Bass is a typical rich bad boy, he is spending billions at the age of seventeen, on partying, boozing and womanizing but later on his character shows depth as he falls for his best friend’s girlfriend Blair Waldorf. Chuck’s best friend is Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) who has been friends with Blair since childhood and is expected to date her in high school by his parents because of their business relations with Blair’s mother Elenor who is a well-known fashion designer. Later on he realizes that he is not as in love with Blair as others want him to be, their relationship has a falling out when Chuck and Blair sleep together. Serena’s character is not as problematic as Blair’s. Serena’s only insecurity is an absent father and her mother remarrying over and over again which puts both Serena and her brother Eric in an uncomfortable position. They always find a way back to eachother as a family, regardless.

The whole show revolves around Serena and Dan’s obsession with her, and Blair’s and Chuck’s relationship mainly. High school drama, family problems, relationship problems, business politics makes this show a very engaging watch. The characters are always dressed in the most expensive attire from Gucci, Chanel, and Christian Dior to Harry Winston from where Chuck gets Blair’s engagement ring. After their high school is finished, all of them go to ivy leagues colleges and pursue the same drama there. Attending the fanciest balls and parties is their favorite pass time, in between all of this Dan and Jenny (Dan’s sister) feel left out but try their best to get in. In the end it is revealed that the person behind Gossip Girl was the lonely boy himself, Dan started this website in hopes of getting into Serena’s social circle, which he does, that too very successfully.
